Dubai's AED 30 Billion Drainage Upgrade: What It Means for Submersible Pumps in Your Building

Submersible Pumps Dubai

Dubai is rebuilding the way it handles rainwater and wastewater, with some of the largest drainage projects in the city's history now underway. The new city networks will move water faster and further than ever. But inside every villa, tower basement and warehouse, the job still starts with one machine. That is why property owners and facility managers are paying closer attention to submersible pumps Dubai buildings rely on every day.

A Wake Up Call From Record Rain

In April 2024, the UAE saw its heaviest rainfall since records began 75 years ago, as reported by WAM. More than 250 mm fell in parts of the country in less than a day. Flooded basements, car parks and underpasses showed how quickly water builds up when drainage cannot keep pace, and how much depends on pumps that start the moment water arrives.

Tasreef: AED 30 Billion to Future Proof Dubai's Drainage

Dubai responded with Tasreef, an AED 30 billion stormwater drainage programme. According to the Dubai Media Office, it aims to raise drainage capacity by 700 percent while cutting construction, operation and maintenance costs of pumping stations by 20 percent.

In April 2026, Dubai Municipality reported that the AED 500 million Deira stormwater project was 36 percent complete. It covers 13 areas, including Al Qusais, Al Garhoud and Al Rashidiya, with 60 km of networks and a new pumping station near Dubai Creek able to handle up to 8,000 litres per second. "Dubai Municipality continues to implement a package of projects under the Tasreef Programme," said Director General Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita.

Five New Contracts Worth AED 2.5 Billion

In February 2026, the Municipality awarded five more Tasreef contracts worth AED 2.5 billion, serving 30 areas and about three million residents by 2040. The work includes a modern pumping station on Dubai Al Ain Road, a main tunnel up to four metres wide and a 27 km network between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Jamayel Road. "The Tasreef Programme represents a practical model of long term strategic planning," bin Ghalita said.

Deep Sewerage Tunnels for a Growing City

Wastewater is getting its own upgrade. The Dubai Strategic Sewerage Tunnels project, valued at around AED 30 billion, will add 75 km of deep tunnels under Bur Dubai and Deira plus 140 km of link sewers, as reported by Zawya. The system moves the city towards gravity flow, cutting the number of large pumping stations it needs.

Why Your Building Still Needs Reliable Pumps

City tunnels and pipes only help once water reaches them. Basements, lift pits, underground car parks and plant rooms sit below the level of the street sewer, so water and waste must be lifted out. That is the job of sewage pumps and drainage pumps, and when they fail, flooding and odour problems follow fast.

Submersible water pumps work fully underwater inside a sump or pit. Because they push water up rather than pull it, they run quietly, start without priming and keep cool in Dubai's heat. Drainage pumps handle rainwater and seepage, while sewage pumps are built to pass solids and fibres without clogging.

How to Choose the Right Submersible Pump

Before you buy, check these points with your supplier:

·   Type of water: clean seepage, rainwater with sand, or raw sewage with solids.

·   Flow and head: how much water must be moved and how high it has to be lifted.

·   Solids handling: larger passages or cutter impellers for sewage lines.

·   Automatic control: a float switch so the pump starts on its own during rain.

·   Standby pump: a duty and standby pair for basements where a failure is not an option.

For homes and small sumps, the Lowara DOMO drainage pump delivers up to 10.8 m³/h with a head of up to 28 metres and handles everything from simple domestic pumping to heavily contaminated water.

Maintenance Before the Rainy Season

UAE rain usually arrives between November and March, so now is the right time to test your pumps. Clean sumps and inlet screens, check float switches, run each pump under load and confirm that alarms work. Our water pump services team handles inspection, repair and annual maintenance contracts for villas, towers and commercial sites.
